Happy New Year, friends!

I’m so, so excited to be starting our Come Follow Me study in the Book of Mormon. It’s going to be pretty amazing, I’m certain. If you’re interested to see my plans for personal scripture study this year, I’ll be sharing a post all about what I’m using in the next couple of days. Stay tuned!

In the meantime I’m happy to share the first installment of my Book of Mormon Sketchnotes. All year long I will be sharing a free page of sketchnotes to go along with each week of the Come Follow Me lessons. Creating these pages each week has been such a great challenge for me and has really helped me to understand the scriptures better. I read each chapter multiple times in order to glean all the goodness I can find to letter/doodle my notes.

Maybe you joined in with the New Testament sketchnotes I share last year? If not, you can see them all here. Not only do I share the weekly doodles, but I also let you know what our family will be studying each day for our scripture study.

I firmly believe that you do not need additional materials in order to teach your family the gospel and learn more about it yourself. All you really need is the scriptures and the Come Follow Me manual. You do not need to plan elaborate lessons every day, or ever. You do not need binders and printables and a laminator. If that stuff brings you joy, go for it!

But my opinion is that if you heap pressure on yourself to go the extra mile with your lessons every single day, if you compare your family study time to what you see on Instagram, you will feel like you come up short. You will wind up feeling burned out and will give up. Please don’t do that!

Simple is meaningful. Consistency makes a bigger impact than impressively planned but sporadic lessons.

Having said that, a little planning does go a long way. So each week I share a quick list of the reading and additional church-provided materials we use (mostly videos) in our family study. These simple lessons often lead to great discussions in our home.

In an effort to simplify my own life a little bit, I’ll be adding all of January’s sketchnotes and lesson plans to this blog post (rather than creating a separate post each week). So check back here to grab each set as they come out.

HOW TO USE BOOK OF MORMON sKETCHNOTES:

TRACE. You can also trace these into your scriptures or journal using a light box or a sunny window.  My husband made me an awesome lightbox, but this one is a great option for you to purchase.

COLORING PAGE. Use as a coloring page for your kids to work on during family scripture time.  Write additional notes and insights on the pages as you go. You could add all the completed sketchnotes pages to a binder to keep as a reminder of the gospel topics you’ve discussed together.

STICKER PAPER. Print on clear sticker paper and cut apart the doodles to add to your scripture journal or into the margins of your scriptures.  (This year I am using a wide-margin study edition of the Book of Mormon from Line Upon Line.  Our family is using their Journaling Edition for our study together as well. But there are so many wide-margin options available! Deseret Book has several great options and you can print this free PDF and have it bound at a local copy shop.)

Printing on clear sticker paper allows you to add color to the doodles using colored pencils, but still be able to see the words beneath them.  I have tried out a few different kinds of colored pencils on this sticker paper.  Ergosoft pencils and Prismacolor pencils work really well.

You can find more videos in the Book of Mormon Video series here. Note: These videos are often pretty long (at least for the attention spans in our home. We will probably not watch all of the videos listed. Our focus is going to be on reading the verses from the scriptures and then if we have time/inclination or need something for kids to do, we’ll watch the videos. NO stress! Do what is right for your family!

UPDATE: It is not working for our family to read + discuss the scriptures AND watch the incredible Book of Mormon videos each evening. The videos are such outstanding resources that I want to make sure we put them to good use and I’ve been mulling over how to make that happen. Then Becky Pitcher shared in her Instagram stories that their family watches all of the videos on Sundays as a refresher. GENIUS! So we’re going to try doing that this week.

I’m not going to stress if we don’t get to them all. We’ll do what we can and that will be plenty. I’m excited!

  5. Thank you so much for sharing your talents with everyone. My daughter and I are excited to study the Book of Mormon together using the sketchnotes you have created! I followed you last yea,r to be able to deepen my understanding of the New Testament, and am really excited to do it again this year with the Book of Mormon.

  6. Hi, I notice that in the schedule for Jan 6th you skipped reading 1 Nephi 1. Was there a reason for this? Thx. We are really working hard on trying to study the scriptures and follow Come Follow Me. We didn’t do a good job in 2019. Thx

    1. No particular reason, just that we don’t read every single verse when we study as a family. We’re more about understanding principles than fitting in every single verse.

  7. Thank you so much for doing all of this for all of us. Your selfless service is greatly appreciated! Just so I know I’m not missing some, you only have the first 2 weeks of January sketch notes on here right? Thank you so much!!

    1. That’s right! I’m adding each week on the Friday or Saturday before the new lesson (if that makes sense!).

    2. That’s right! I’m adding each week on the Friday or Saturday before the new lesson (if that makes sense!).

  8. Thank you for sharing this! I printed them last year with the intention of tracing them, but it didn’t happen, this year, i’m opting for stickers. what kind of sticker paper do you recommend? I found some on amazon, but the clear sheets are so much more expensive than white. Have you found a less expensive option? what i’m seeing is about $1 a page…

    1. The sticker paper I use is about $1 a page. That’s the best price I’ve found. But when you factor in how many actual stickers you get with that, it seems like a pretty reasonable price to me!

      1. Do you recommend the glossy or matte finish on the sticker paper? I can’t decide which would work best for putting in my scriptures.

  9. I just found your site and am so excited! My daughter and I have been searching and this is exactly what we have been looking for. We both have journaling Book of Mormons and can’t draw 🙂 Thank you so much for sharing your amazing talent! This makes me look forward to learning each week! I can’t wait to share with my friends!

  10. You are so AMAZING! I used all your sketchnotes for the New Testament and i am so grateful you are doing them for the Book of Mormon. Your sketchnotes make scripture study so much fun!! Thank you for sharing your talent. It is so very appreciated! Have a Blessed Year

    Lots of Love

  11. Thank you so much for sharing. I had a difficult time last year with my 13 year old not wanting to read as a family. This year I found your sketches and she is loving coloring them and adding them to her journal. So far no more complaints about not wanting to participate.

  12. I just found your website and I am so thrilled with everything you so generously offer. Thank you so much for sharing your hard work and beautiful talent!

  13. We watch the videos on Sunday BEFORE we read the content during the week. I’m hoping it helps my kids visualize better while we’re reading during the week.

  14. When I click on the link for 1Nephi 8-10, it brings up sketchnotes for the previous week. Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks!

  15. I am not finding the sketchnotes for “Armed with Righteousness and the power of God”. Am I missing them somewhere.

  16. I absolutely love these sketches for the Book of Mormon. Will there be a free weekly download or will there be a book to purchase?
    Thank you so much!!

    1. Each week’s free download is available in one monthly blog post. So all the pages for January are in this post, just click where it says download sketchnotes. ♥️

  17. I haven’t been able to find the sketch notes for chapters 16-22. Could you show me where they are? 🙂 My son and I love them and are anxious to use them.

  18. Your sketchnotes have been such a fun addition to my scripture study this year to mark in my wide margins the phrases and images that I most want to remember when I flip back through the Book of Mormon. I wish I had found this last year for the NT, but I’ll be coming back for those files another year. 😉 Thank you for sharing your talents (and for free, too)!!
