In 2013 our family was in the midst of trying to adopt. After years of being a foster family, a failed private adoption, and several other heartbreaks, we were finally matched with a birth mom. Jason and I told our immediate family, but otherwise kept the news to ourselves. It was just too painful too keep people updated when we didn’t quite trust this adoption was actually going to happen yet.
I had a lot of nervous energy during those months and decided to start my first daily art challenge as a way to calm my anxiousness. The premise was really simple: make art every day.
That one challenge ended up leading to several years of making art every single day in various forms. Ultimately it changed my life and gave me the opportunity to be an artist for a living. (Also, that long-anticipated adoption did go through and we now have a miraculous 11 year old in our family because of it.)
I’ll be joining in once again with the official 100 Day Project starting this Sunday! I’d highly encourage you to join in if you’re at all interested. The community is active and encouraging and an atmosphere like this is a great jump-start for any creative habit you’re hoping to develop.
This year I’ll be making 100 tiny fiber art pieces, similar to those in the photos here. I’ll be doing some felting, some embroidery, some fabric collage. I want to keep the medium open because I know that sometimes I need to switch things up a bit to stay motivated.
I’ll be sharing what I create on Instagram periodically. Join me there to see this project in real time!
And I’d love to know if you join in with the 100 Day Project! Reply to this email to share your project with me.

Dinosaurs at the Dinner Party by Edward Dolnick (4 stars)
I was not expecting to find this as fascinating as I did. I have been talking about this book to anyone who will listen. Super engaging and not at all dry, I found it really interesting to learn about this time period and the advances that moved science forward.
A Most Agreeable Murder by Julia Seales (3 stars)
This was silly and fun. A tongue-in-cheek murder mystery set in a slightly weird, alternate regency time period. Over the top and a little ridiculous, it was very enjoyable.

Here’s to making the time for the things we love to do!
