So much of the work we do needs to be done again, day after day. Especially if part of that work is caring for little humans, it can feel monotonous and daunting. Cleaning and laundry and planning/shopping for/cooking food for our families. Many of the tasks that make up our lives are recurring.
The best advice I've ever received was this:
Do something every day that cannot be undone
My daily art practice sprang from this advice, and it has literally changed my life.
But hear me: it doesn't need to be that big. The goal here is just to help you feel more like yourself every day. You don't need to develop a whole new career.
The things I choose to do just for myself every day help me to better serve the people I love.
My list of daily things that can't be undone include:
Reading
Art
Movement (these days I ride my peloton, lift weights and often go for a walk in the afternoon).
I am to accomplish something in each of these categories every single day. Even on busy days in overwhelming seasons, these Can’t Be Undone tasks help me to feel grounded, to feel connected to myself and able to care well for myself and the people I love.
What's on your "can't be undone" list?
On My Desk:
I’m in the midst of new hand embroidery designs for Halloween, Christmas and Winter. Looking forward to sharing more about this as they become available! At the moment I’m in the fun stage of drawing/stitching and redrawing/restitching designs in order to get them just right and ready for writing the patterns and instructions.
Around Here
Reading: Just yesterday I finished The Light Pirate which I very much enjoyed. It’s a near-future climate disaster coming of age story with just the tiniest bit of magic. Strong female characters and beautiful writing. Loved it.
The Comfort of Crows is my favorite kind of non-fiction: part memoir, part nature commentary. I’m always down for a nature-related memoir and this perfectly fits the bill.
Watching: Going through Olympics withdrawls a little bit. What is everyone watching now?
On Instagram: Preserving some sweet notes in my journal and A Peek Into My Gratitude Journal
Dabbling in: Sock Snakes / Sock Tubes. I’m trying my hand at this new to me technique in an effort to get some Christmas gift knitting done early this year.
On YouTube: Collage Paper Packs
In the House/Yard: The garden is in full swing!
In the Shop: Collage Fodder Bundles
Here’s to making the time for the things we love to do!
