31 Days of Free Hand Embroidery Patterns

31 Days is a daily blogging challenge, started by Myquillyn Smith in 2009 and now hosted by Crystal Stine. The idea is to write on the same topic every single day in the month of October. Over the years it’s grown tremendously and is now joined by thousands of bloggers every year. I am joining in with the 31 Days writing challenge for the first time this year. Every day for the month of October, I will be sharing a free embroidery pattern, designed by yours truly.

These patterns are all pretty simple and would be perfect for a beginner to try out this beautiful craft, or for a more experienced embroiderer to dress up in their own way.

A little bit about me:

For those who are visiting for the first time, I’d love to introduce myself. I am a homeschooling Mama to three miracle children. You can read more about our infertility and adoption story here. I am completely smitten with my husband of 14 years. He supports my crazy ideas and fixes all the things I break. After the countless hours we’ve spent talking over the years, it’s surprising that there’s anything left to say. But there always is. Our family loves to be outdoors and we spend as much time there as possible.

I am a Maker and I consistently have way too many projects in the works. I have a deep love for art, knitting, and embroidery and always have at least one project going in each area. I love teaching art classes, especially to kids. Their unencumbered creativity is a constant inspiration to me. This year I am challenging myself to paint or draw something every single day. A little bit about my method:

I use a light box (similar to this one, except mine was made from scratch by my talented and very handy husband) and a water soluble tracing pen to trace the pattern onto fabric. I have never tried it myself, but I know a lot of people like to use transfer paper and then iron the pattern onto the fabric instead of needing to trace all those lines. I usually use DMC embroidery floss.

All the patterns I’ve designed for this challenge are sized to fit a 4 inch embroidery hoop, so the projects can be done very quickly. Of course, you’re welcome to resize the patterns and stitch them larger or smaller, if you so desire.

I will give you the details for which stitches I used on the pattern, but I won’t provide any tutorials as to how to do the stitches. There are countless videos on YouTube that teach embroidery, so it should be very easy to find one that explains each stitch in detail, if you need it.
