A Peek Into My Sketchbook
One of the huge unforeseen benefits of my year of creative habits challenge has been the memory-keeping aspect of keeping a daily sketchbook. As I look back through these photos from the past few weeks, I can remember exactly where I was while I worked on the pages and the emotions I was feeling at the time. For example, I drew the quote above on the day I heard about the killings in Charleston, SC.
We did a lot of traveling in July, and my pages reflect that. Here–in my adorable tiny watercolor sketchbook– are a few scenes from our trip to Lake Powell and another trip to visit family in Iowa.
This page was also done at Lake Powell and is a linework representation of a plateau we’ve been camping near for many years. My favorite bit is the water.
I like to look back and see the progression of ideas through these sketchbooks. The Lake Powell plateau picture above reminded me of a favorite hymn and so I drew the design above, which then translated into a coloring page in my shop.
I fell in love with the rolling hills and wide open sky of Northern Iowa while we were there and was constantly taking photos out the window of the car as we sped by. The watercolor above was inspired by one of those photos.
I’m about halfway through this challenge and already it feels like a deeply-rooted part of my life. I definitely go through lulls in enthusiasm, but for the most part I look forward to this time every day and I absolutely see myself continuing this habit into future years.
