Art Journaling with Kids: Abstract Tissue Paper Creations

I am delighted to share my love of art with my children as we make artistic exploration a priority in our homeschool.  Please join me each Friday as I post the latest addition to our art journals.  I share easy ideas to incorporate art into your family culture.
You don’t need to be a homeschooling family to spend time making art together!

Let me start off by saying that the day we did this project was a grumpy day for most of the family.

Elijah was terrorizing the schoolroom while we tried to work.  Ellie and Ethan were bickering.  Ethan wanted nothing to do with the the project. Usually when we get started he gets into it, but not this time.  He whined and complained the whole time.  But, we finished and he moved on and I like to think it brightened his day, at least a little.

This was a simple project (see excuses above).  I grabbed some colored tissue paper, and paintbrushes,  thinned some Elmer’s glue and we were on our way.

Supplies:

Art journals
colored tissue paper, cut or ripped into squares
Elmer’s glue thinned with water (1/3 water: 2/3 glue) or modpodge, if you have any
Paintbrushes for spreading the glue

Start by spreading a layer of glue over about a quarter of the page.  Lay the tissue paper down on the wet glue.  You can create design, or go completely abstract.  Spread more glue over the tissue paper, until it’s all stuck down to the page.  Move on to the next section and repeat until the whole page is completed.

Set aside and let dry.  And try not to let the grumpiness of your kiddos wear off on you.
