What I’ve Been Reading: March + April 2020
Every month I share super short and sweet book reviews of the books I’ve finished lately. Being in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic has thrown me for a loop reading-wise. Everything feels so weird. My attention span is next to nothing, everything just feels off.
But I still managed to finish a handful of books over the past couple of months. Here’s what I’ve been reading lately:
The Only Plane in the Sky by Garrett Graff
This is such an important, powerful book. If you can, listen to the audiobook. I cried and cried and loved it. This will be required reading for our high schoolers.
Mere Motherhood by Cindy Rollins
I was a bit disappointed by this book. I loved the sections where she discussed books and book recommendations and would loved for it to have included more of that.
The Wonderful World of Oz by L. Frank Baum
The kiddos and I listened to this audiobook, read by Anne Hathaway. She did such an excellent job reading this beloved classic. We all loved it.
The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert
This was a great mixture of fantasy and real-world. It took me a bit to get into the story, but after the first hundred pages or so I couldn’t put it down. Awesome escapist read, which is definitely what I needed at the time.
Whose Body by Dorothy Sayers
Fun, easy, non-graphic murder mystery. Along the same lines as Agatha Christie. A perfect quick read.
Thunderhead by Neal Schusterman
Oh, man. This series is so, so good. It’s gripping and unique and not overly intense. I liked the second book even more than the first and I’m already reading the 3rd, which is not typical for me. I usually wait a bit between books in a series.
The Line Tender by Kate Allen
Such a sweet, tender story about friendship, love and grief. Listening to this audiobook had me sobbing in the car.
Book of a Thousand Days by Shannon Hale
Shannon Hale is the master of strong female characters in extremely well-constructed fantasy worlds. This is perhaps my favorite of her books so far.
Our Only May Amelia by Jennifer Holm
Read this aloud to my kiddos. We all enjoyed it, even the 3 year old. She was super invested in the characters.
All Things Bright and Beautiful by James Herriot
I feel like I’ve been in such a reading funk lately, can’t quite seem to finish anything, nothing sounds very appealing. But James Herriot is the perfect way to get out of a reading slump. Such quaint, well-written, funny and uplifting stories. I love everything I’ve ever read of his.
The Power of Stillness
Wow. This is so powerful. I’ve listened to it slowly over the past month or so but I feel like I need to start it again immediately. It is profound and inspiring and exactly the book I need right now. The examples are so helpful.
